SPORTING clubs are being asked to follow the example of the Lake Wendouree Football Netball Club, and enter as many players and members as possible in the second Ballarat Come to Life Cycle Classic. It is hoped up to $100,000 will be raised for the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre when the event is held on Sunday. Last year the Lakers entered a small team after the death of team mate Dale Shorter who passed away in October 2007 from cancer. He was just 25.This year the club has entered two teams of players and committee members, and is on track for a third, president Gavin Maher said."We really want to support the cancer council because we lost one of our footballers to cancer, and we think it's for a very good cause and because it's such a close issue to us," he said."It was devastating for us. Most of the boys around the football club had grown up with him and knew him all his life _ albeit (a life) too short." Maher said if enough clubs entered it could provide an interesting competition ahead of the football season.John Callanan, who lost his daughter-in-law Michelle (widely known as Bunny) to breast cancer on Boxing Day last year, is supporting the club in its effort and encouraged other sporting groups to enter. The cycle classic includes 50km, 85km or 100km road ride options through Buninyong, Yendon, Mt Egerton, Ballan, Dunnstown and back into Ballarat.Alternatively there are relay rides around Lake Wendouree for teams of 12.To enter visit www.ballaratcycleclassic.com.au
