LPFL: Towns regain that finals feeling

09 Sep, 2010 01:33 AM
NUMBNESS is gradually wearing off the Lexton and Skipton townships.

The spark is starting to come back, grand final fever taking hold once more, after the weekend's Lexton Plains Football League was abandoned.

Floods cut off access to Ballarat for some clubs involved in grand final action, including Skipton.

So Lexton and Skipton will attempt to suit-up on Sunday in the battle for the league's last senior football premiership.

The LPFL survived to live one more week, but will be disbanded at the final siren.

Skipton president Graham Layley said the town had seemed ''flat'' at the weekend, but training early in the week brought back some normality.

''We had a few distractions this week with the creek flooding,'' Layley said.

''Once we had one training run out of the way, we were back to grand final week.''

Businesses and farming stock were mostly under threat in the Skipton floods.

Skipton coach Tim McKay said all locals helped out and it pulled the town together.

McKay said the week off was handy for his players to help get over a tough preliminary final against Rokewood-Corindhap at Linton a week earlier.

Emus selections had been tailored to a wet grand final and could change in tonight's selections.

Lexton president Mal Sargent said the Tigers had kept their routine as normal as possible.

While Lexton was not directly affected by the floods, Sargent said it had taken awhile for grand final fever to rebuild in town.

''It certainly was very strange to have no football on Saturday,'' Sargent said.

''The mood has been a bit suppressed this week but excitement is coming back.''

Three weeks' between matches has allowed some Tigers with niggling injuries to strengthen their case for spots in the grand final team, which will also be reassessed tonight.

* LPFL secretary Rod Ward said logistics were in place to guarantee a smooth transition at Eureka Stadium this weekend.

Back-to-back grand finals have complicated the process with Central Highlands Football League already hosting its grand finals at the venue on Saturday.

The LPFL met with the City of Ballarat, Eureka Stadium tenant North Ballarat Football Club and Central Highlands Football League on Monday to organise cleaning and ground maintenance for the grand final.

Ward was confident all parties could pull off the undertaking for a big weekend of football.
