Miners outplay Qld's finest

BALLARAT Miners have charged to the top of the South East Australian Basketball League east conference ladder.

The RetireInvest Ballarat Miners' re-emergence as a SEABL power continued with an emotion-charged 113-108 win over Southern Districts Spartans at the Minerdome on Saturday night.

This gives the Miners eight wins in 12 games - ahead of Knox, North West Tasmania and Southern Districts in the top four.

It ended a disastrous road trip for the Spartans, who also lost to Bendigo on Friday night.

Marcus Toney-El gave a match-winning performance, while Jamal Brown and Ricky Henderson also starred as the Miners lifted from 13 points down four minutes into the last quarter.

Ballarat coach Shane Mathison said it was a performance full of emotion.

"We don't want to hide from that.

"To come through a game like that, against a highly talented team, means a lot," he said.

Mathison said he had no hesitation declaring it the best and most important win of the season.

He said the Miners had attacked the Spartans with an up-tempo game in a bid to run the visitors off their legs, highly conscious that they had had done it tough in a loss to Bendigo the previous night.

"We wanted to capitalise on that," he said.

"An up-tempo game also suits us.

"The more aggressive and attacking we play, the better," he said.

Mathison said the Miners let up on this pressure in the second half - falling into the Spartans' hands.

Ballarat and Southern Districts each had opportunities to make the game their own.

The Miners led by nine near the end of a first-half arm wrestle and then the Spartans used a spate of seven three-point plays to take control to the stage where Ballarat appeared to be a spent force.

Brisbane's wealth of National Basketball League experience shot five three-pointers from six attempts in the third term and there was little the Miners could do about it.

The Spartans kept up the onslaught, but the high percentage was too much to maintain and Ballarat took its chance in a thrilling last 12 minutes.

Henderson (12 points) and Brown (11 points and eight rebounds) took the game by the scruff of the neck and the Miners shut down the Spartans.

Ballarat took the lead for the last time with 92 seconds to play and then went on a 13-2 run to clinch victory.

The Miners' defensive ability to keep the visitors to just four points in the last six minutes said it all for the discipline of the Ballarat players.
