PORTLAND rider Thomas Alexander was the champion but Mt Clear's Zacob Raine proved the hero at the Ballarat Rovers Monza Park Two Day Open at the weekend.
Alexander won all the races he contested at the mud-soaked motocross event at Buninyong in a dominant display, but Raine earned plenty of praise, finishing second in the A-grade open lites on his return from a horrific crash four years ago that could have ended his riding career.
Alexander took out both the senior lites and senior open classes, claiming the A-grade lites on a Honda CRF 250 on Saturday and Sunday morning with the maximum possible 100 points, before backing up on a Honda CRF 450 each afternoon for the open division.
Raine (Suzuki RMZ 250) finished second overall behind Alexander in the senior lites A-grade division with 82 points, with Matt Plagemen (Yamaha YZF 250) from Gordon third with 78 points.
The Suzuki rider, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Sunday, had led a heat before a clutch failure forced him to drop a place.
The junior 2-stroke class proved a tight battle between Daryl Perkins from Ross Creek and Jack Powell from White Swan. Perkins scored his first win in only his second season with 100 points overall, ahead of Powell on 86 points.
In other solid results from Ballarat riders, Gary Charlton finished third in senior open C-grade and second in the veterans class, and Todd Chandler (Ballarat) was third in the 85 big wheel C-grade.
Lee Cairns won the senior lites C-grade with 91 points.
The Ballarat Rovers didn't enjoy the greatest start to the meet, however, with club rider Kyle Robson suffering a broken leg after crashing on the opening lap of the first race of the meeting.
