Netball: Brown Hill set for the big one

06 Nov, 2009 11:02 PM
BROWN HILL SB will be a warm favourite to end Dela Assuntas' six-year premiership domination when the finals series of The Athlete's Foot Cup starts next week.

Brown Hill finished the Ballarat Netball Association's premier competition as minor premier following Thursday's final round of home and away matches.

The ladder-leaders were too strong for Brown Hill BMC, winning 59-44.

With SB's Sue Nalder sick, Casey Frame worked the first half with Carly Cunningham and the second half with Danni Davidson in goals, with both combinations working well.

Kara Hart, Jacqui Clifton and Kate Slattery all rotated through defence, making BMC goalers Jess Parry, Erin Riley and Meg Gilbert create and work out their different opponents for each quarter.

*Eureka Kellies finished the season with a big 76-30 loss to third-placed Dela Power FM.

Kellies are in a rebuilding stage, with senior players retiring this season, and were missing Nicole Rundell and Ebony Place for the end-of-season clash, putting more pressure on their young names.

Dela goalers Leesa Wall and Sam Den Ouden were on fire in the circle, posting 42 goals by half-time.

The Dela centre-court players dominated the transition out of defence, with Jess MacGowan, Libby Purtell, Tiarni Beasley and Lauren Atkinson all displaying strong attacking netball before the finals series.

Candice Pearce, Wendy Crack and Jaime Wallace formed a strong wall in defence and frustrated Eureka's attempts at goal by playing their trademark attacking style.

*An understrength Dela Assuntas played strong, attacking netball in their 69-28 win over Sturt Jade.

Assuntas were without Kate McLeod and Lauren Quinlan in defence, which saw young Caitlyn McPhee step up and take on the goal-keeper's role alongside centre-court player Cassie Hobbs.

Goalers Georgia Cann and Cindy Daniel worked well together and shot accurately, while creating plenty of space in their area.

The centre play was sharp, with some clever passing from Amanda Clarke, Melissa Beaston and Bianca Woods.
