DECORATED Jasper gets his best opportunity yet to land a big one at Bendigo tonight.
Everything has fallen into place for the nine-year-old for the group 2 $50,000 Bendigo Pacing Cup, 2650m. He has drawn the pole and this time there are no superstars in the line-up.
Decorated Jasper has raced in Bendigo three times – twice in the cup.
He finished equal fourth to Smoken Up last year and third to Changeover in 2010.
In his other appearance at the track, he finished a close second to Safari in a free-for-all.
Tonight’s cup has attracted an even lot.
Villagem and top flight mare Make Mine Cullen have outstanding records, but Decorated Jasper has also been mixing it with the best on the Australasian Grand Circuit and this might be his turn. A win would be Decorated Jasper’s biggest pay day, as it would be for his Ross Creek trainer Paul Rowse. Amadmancomesundone will line up alongside Decorated Jasper.
Trained by Craig Knowles in Ballarat, Amadmancomesundone faces by far his toughest test in open class.
The Night Pearl is leading contender
DUNNSTOWN trainer-driver David Murphy is within reach of another South Australian classic.
His impressive The Night Pearl is a leading contender in the group 1 $30,000 SA Derby, 2230m, at Globe Derby Park tonight.
The son of Village Jasper is showing real promise with a couple of handy wins and then a close second to Charlie Macsheen in the group 3 $40,000 Victoria Sires Classic.
The Night Pearl, which will come out of gate four, yesterday tightened from $3.10 to $1.90 with TAB Sportsbet as he dominated betting.
Tonkin going for second Hamilton
PETER Tonkin is eyeing his second Hamilton Pacing Cup in three seasons. The Smythes Creek trainer has last-start winner Devilish Smile in the $25,000 standing start feature event tomorrow.
Village Of Dreams won the event for Tonkin two years ago. Devilish Smile won the group 1 Vicbred Super Series final for three-year-old colts and geldings in July. but has been lightly raced since.
Emma Stewart also has Mickey Mac in the cup at Hamilton.
