Pride ready at full force

27/08/2008 12:31:00 AM
HOW DO you stop a vengeful Force?

Ballarat Pride dismantled the flying DC Force in round 12, setting up a delicious sequel in tonight's state league semi-finals.

Now the puzzle lies in conquering a bolstered Force outfit.

Force is still bristling from the 19-goal defeat, the only blemish on its otherwise unbeaten record.

For Pride it was penance for crumbling under Force earlier in the season.

Deep in Melbourne's State Netball and Hockey Centre, the next chapter in the saga offers the chance to tempt fate.

The winner will advance straight to the Netball Victoria state league division one grand final, where up for grabs is the competition's last premiership crown in its current form.

The loser will be thrown into the preliminaries, forced to climb back the hard way.

Ballarat co-coach Jo Dash said Pride believed this crown was its destiny.

But so too do Force.

"This is going to be close," Dash said.

"We have a long paralleled history through state league together . . . we each think a premiership is finally our destiny this year, something we want to finish that started a long time ago."

Force is fast, not afraid to release the ball and exploits every spare bit of space it can find.

This style pummelled Pride with a 9-1 deficit five minutes into their last bout before Pride, remaining calm under fire, churned momentum about heading into the first break.

Pride's flooding defence then muddled Force and severed links to prime shooter, Emma Smith, who boasts a potent mix of height, strength and mobility.

Dash warned her players post match that an angry Force would hit Pride harder should they meet again.

"They have the confidence of being top of the ladder, but on the other side, we are the only team to have beaten them this season," Dash said.

"It'll come down to how we concentrate and focus.

"We need to make sure that positive energy is sent into the right places. It's completely up to us."

Pride will rely on the strength of its different combinations to match whatever Force throws at it.

Captain Emma Farrell is back in stellar form under the ring, posting a 93 per cent accuracy last week, in a strong goaling rotation with Sue Nalder and Georgia Cann.

Vice-captain Melissa Beaston has led the charge through the centre-court with clean drives and intense defensive work with Libby Purtell and Lauren Atkinson forming a lethal tag-team in wing attack.

Circle defenders Simone Segrave, Kate Schippers and Kate McLeod, with Johanna Dash on the wing, each have their own trademark style to tear apart an opposing attack.

The mission will be to seize control of play from the outset - Force will not make the mistake of underestimating Pride again.
