05 Feb, 2012 11:17 PM
DECORATED Jasper is Menangle-bound after arguably the best run of his career.

The nine-year-old took a lead role in Smoken Up smashing the Melton track record in a free-for-all, 1720m, on Saturday night.

Smoken Up ran down Decorated Jasper to rate 1:51.1

Decorated Jasper charged to the lead down the back straight and into the home turn, dashing clear.

Smoken Up rallied to get home by 4m, with the race run in 27.8, 28.3, 27.4 and 28.1 seconds.

Ross Creek trainer Paul Rowse has a race at Menangle in mind while many of the country’s stars are in Perth for the Inter-Dominion Pacing Championship.

Tontine Pacers

at Ararat

The Tontine Pacers Series begins at Ararat tonight.

This year’s series will culminate in a $30,000 final in Ballarat on Saturday, February 25.

Two heats will be contested by the smart Emma Stewart pair of Mister Sheedy and Galleons Prospect.

Top class four-year-old Royal Verdict had drawn the pole in the opening heat, but has been scratched after failing at Melton on Saturday night and will not get an opportunity to add to his 11 wins and $502,000 in earnings.

Mister Sheedy is also a four-year-old, with six wins in just eight career starts.

His biggest obstacle will be his inside second row draw.

Mister Sheedy has had two starts this season for wins in Ballarat and Melton.

Galleons Prospect has won three of four starts since joining Stewart’s Smythes Creek stable.

The second round of heats will be at Horsham next Monday and semi-finals at Geelong on Saturday, February 18.

A YEAR ago Equal Rights was racing as an out-and-out stayer.

She was twice placed over 3000m and also at 2500m at Moonee Valley.

It is a different story now, with Ballarat trainer Simon Morrish turning the clock back.

Equal Rights is winning over 1600m, a distance she won over two years ago.

The five-year-old made it two victories in a row in a 0-68 for mares, 1600m, at MV on Friday night.

It was significant jump in class after scoring in a 0-62 handicap, 1600m, at Great Western, but it made no different with her finishing hard.

Equal Rights ($17) has won four of 22 starts for more than $60,000 in stakes.DECORATED Jasper is Menangle-bound after arguably the best run of his career.
