FOOTY clubs are only too happy to celebrate players who make a major milestone.
When an umpire reaches the 100 senior game mark it can sometimes pass unnoticed.
Today, when Roger Le Grand takes control of the Ballarat versus Lake Wendouree clash at Dahlsens Park, it will be his 100th senior Ballarat Football League match as a central umpire.
While Le Grand won't be running through a banner to mark the occasion, the 2007 BFL umpire of the year said it would be a satisfying moment nevertheless.
"It is something I was looking to achieve at the start of year. It was my main goal," Le Grand said.
"I've learnt not to take things for granted because injuries do happen.
"I'm not sure if anybody will know when I go out onto the oval, but I don't really mind. And once you step on the ground you don't think about it anymore anyway.
"As an umpire I feel I've done a good job when nobody notices me. This week is no different."
Le Grand becomes only the 14th umpire to officiate 100 senior RegionalOne Ballarat Football League matches.
In all, Le Grand has umpired 448 football matches in different age groups and competitions over a career that already spans 18 years.
The highlights have been six senior grand final appearances: two for the BFL, one each for the Central Highlands, Lexton Plains and Yarra Valley Mountain District leagues, and one in the VCFL division one grand final in 1999.
The 33-year-old is pleased the milestone will pass before the finals begin next week, both for convenience and also so that it passes with the minimum of fuss.
Le Grand is unsure how much longer he will continue umpiring - it is a difficult thing to juggle family life, work and umpiring at times - but he doesn't think his best is in any way behind him.
"Umpires cop a lot of flack but (Ballarat Football Umpires Association chairman) Mick Winter and (coach) Warren Parnell have done an outstanding job in terms of our preparation work during the year," Le Grand said.
"I got the award as BFL umpire of the year last year but I think I've actually improved this year because of their work."
