YOUNG gun Anthony Fisher will debut for Ballarat Miners in the South East Australian Basketball League on his home court on Sunday.Fisher’s first appearance as a fully fledged Miner comes with the team at the top of their game and looking to make Hobart Chargers their fifth victim in as many games. The 17-year-old has been fast-tracked into the Ballarat Holden Miners roster – filling the 10th position – as the first major step in injecting homegrown talent into the team. The Miners were formed in 1985 primarily to give the city’s best young basketball players a pathway into an elite competition without leaving home.Right now, though, retirements and departures have the Miners without one player who has come through the Ballarat junior ranks.Ballarat head coach Guy Molloy said while recruiting from across regional Victoria remained important – captain Adam McSwain comes from Riddell, Shaun Bruce from Horsham, Cam McCallum from Melton and Ryan Barnes from Sunbury – the long-term objective was to return to having a core group of Ballarat graduates. Molloy said promoting Fisher was a step in the right direction in achieving this.“It also highlights the development path available for juniors who might like to represent the Miners in the future,” he said.Molloy said Fisher, who plays for Ballarat in the Victorian Junior Basketball League under-18 competition and has represented Vic Country, was an exceptional young talent.“He’s as good as any player as I have seen at junior level for quite some time,” said Molloy, who is also Ballarat Basketball Association’s elite performance manager and Australian under-17 men’s coach. “This opportunity will give Anthony an opportunity to develop his game under elite conditions with quality senior players of the likes of Miners Dan Joyce, Shaun Bruce and Jared Scoines.“ This will ultimately hold him in good stead as he strives for a place in the Australian Emus (under-19) team in 2013,” Molloy said.Fisher, who plays with Wildcats at club level, joins a small group of teenage players to join the Miners rosters. These include Braith Cox, Andrew Bridges, Mat Campbell, Matt Nunn, Matt Sheehan and Dion Collard.
