Sooze looks the goods for another country cup

06 Nov, 2009 10:50 PM
DARREN Weir-trained Sooze is expected to win back-to-back country cups at Ararat tomorrow.

The six-year-old is an odds-on favourite for the $50,000 Ararat Cup, 2000m, where she will carry top weight of 57kg.

Sooze's last-start St Arnaud Cup success was her first since January this year.

The Ballarat-trained mare, which has been placed twice at listed level, ran last in her first two starts this campaign before an improved fourth placing behind the red-hot Bourbonstreetblues in the Murtoa Cup. Sooze then ran

second in a handicap event in Adelaide before securing a comfortable victory at St Arnaud on October 24.

She will be ridden by apprentice jockey Jarrod Fry tomorrow.

Sooze's main dangers seem to be the Barry James-trained Sylvan O'Reilly and Miss Martika for Wayne Walters, which are equal on the second line of betting.

Sylvan O'Reilly, who won this race last year, won on Horsham Cup day two starts ago, while Miss Martika was a well-beaten second in the Mortlake Cup last outing.

Terry Kelly will also prepare Red Riviera for the cup.

Tomorrow's race meeting is the richest on the Wimmera's calendar, and includes the $60,000 China Bowl, 1600m, and the $26,500 Golden Grain Series Final, 1310m.
