TODAY Ballarat, tomorrow the world. That is the goal of Ben Couch, who won the Ballarat junior A-grade racquetball championship on Sunday.
Couch defeated Peter Murnane 18-21 21-13 in the final round-robin game, after both went in undefeated, at Ballarat Squash and Racquetball Fitness Centre.
"I put a lot of training into squash and racquetball so it's good to get another win - it's good to see the hard work pay off," the St Patrick's Year 12 student said.
Couch is Victorian No.1 in junior racquetball - ranked 15 for men - and is a member of the Victorian under-19 squash team. He is ranked third in the state for his age group.
"I definitely prefer squash because I want to join the world circuit after leaving high school, and it's a more-established circuit compared to racquetball," the 17-year-old said.
He will defer university for the next year or two and join the Asian circuit of the world squash tour, with the initial goal of making the top 300 in the world.
This will start in March when he travels to Malaysia for the Milo Allstar Junior Championships and the Kuala Lumpur Junior Open.
It was through Ballarat Associated Schools that Couch became involved in racquetball, which led him to squash.
"I started playing a lot and the Victorian Institute of Sport identified I had talent and now I'm a member of the Victorian Institute of Sport talent development squad," he said.
He has learnt how to manage his time very effectively this year.
"Probably the toughest thing this year is juggling squash and school and a part-time job as well," Couch said.
