PERSEVERANCE has led St Alipius Parish School to its first state sporting championship in almost a decade.
A hard-working boy’s soccer team is ready to tackle the Victorian Primary School Sports Association state finals at Darebin International Sports Centre next Tuesday.
St Alipius soccer player Brayden Baker said excitement was building in the school yard with classmates offering lots of well-wishes.
Baker said the team had gelled really well and was looking forward to the challenge.
‘‘We’ve learnt how to play as a team,’’ Baker said.
‘‘Other teams we have beaten might have been a bit more skilful but didn’t play as a team.
‘‘Not everyone in our team is an exceptional player but we encourage each other and don’t give up.’’
St Alipius qualified for the round robin-style state championships via regionals, as the top boys’ team from
across Ballarat, Geelong, Warrnambool and Bendigo.
The boys had a nerve-racking final regional game against a leading Geelong school.
Baker, who also plays for Ballarat Academy soccer, said the synthetic turf was really fast.
St Alipius was one-nil up with five minutes to play with the Geelong team sharpening its attack.
Goalkeeper Jordan Stevens said his team was lucky to keep the ball out of the box.
Stevens, who also plays for Vic Park under-13s, said he liked the pressure of playing goalkeeper.
‘‘It’s a lot better than running everywhere but you have to concentrate and have quick reflexes,’’ Stevens said.
‘‘You’re helped by your defence with lots of talking and encouragement.’’
St Alipius was keen to try its luck at state level.
Ballarat Grammar will also be in action in the VPSSA girls state soccer finals in Melbourne on Tuesday.
