WORLD championship bronze medallist Mitchell Watt wants to add Australia's richest footrace - the Stawell Gift - to his growing list of achievements.
After continuing his winning streak in his pet long jump event in Brisbane on Saturday, Watt announced that he wants to take a shot at the this year's Stawell Gift.
"I want to. I had an opportunity to do it last year (but couldn't)," the Queenslander said.
"I've heard its a good weekend down there, so I'm keen to go."
Watt leapt 8.15 metres to easily take out the long jump at at the Brisbane Athletics Classic.
Ironically, this bettered a 20-year-old meet record held by Stawell Gift promoter David Culbert, who jumped 8.12m in 1990.
Culbert said Watt was one of the rising stars of world athletics and the Stawell Athletic Club was following up Watt's wish to run at Central Park in April.
He said Watt was set to run at the Easter carnival last year, but was a last-minute selection in the Australian team for the world championships and pulled out.
"He would have been a massive show ... he has speed to burn," Culbert said.
Watt ran a 10.37-second 100m on the Gold Coast last year, which ranked him fifth fastest in Australia for 2009.
Watt's rise through the world athletics ranks has been impressive, leaping a personal best of 8.43m last year to become the number two on the Australian all-time list behind Jai Taurima, who ran at Stawell in 2001 after his silver
medal at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.
Watt won the bronze medal at the world titles in Berlin, which was his international debut.
He will compete at domestic meets in Sydney and Melbourne before devoting his energy to the world indoor championships in Doha next month. This would then see him running in the Stawell Gift before going to the national
championships in Perth on April 16-18, where he will add the 100m to his program.
