Tennis: Cats too good for inspired Blues

IN THE match of the day, the Cats defeated the Blues 4-8-63 to 1-3-54 in round five of the Ballarat Open Tennis Federation, which was singles-only week.

Project Window Cats No.1 woman and Ballarat junior Zoe Hives played brilliant tennis to defeat the winner of the past three Ballarat Open Singles Championships, Kara Smith, 6-3 6-3.

The No.1 men's singles was of a high standard, with two unbeaten players - the Cats' Steven Packham and Russell Building Group Blues' James Millikan - doing battle, with Packham winning a tight contest 6-4 7-6.

The Blues' Alex Walsh played his best singles in over a year to defeat Lachlan Simpson 6-3 6-3.

Red Lion Kangaroos consolidated top spot with a 4-8-53 victory over the King Print Tigers 1-3-37.

For the Tigers, No.2 man Ryan Michelle scored a tough three-set victory over John Schreenan and was well backed up by Will Stewart, Rochelle Joyce and Madison Browning, while for the Tigers, No.1 man Mitchell Burman

scored a crushing win over Michael Cross.

In the last match of the day, the Cuthberts Cougars proved too good for Selkirk Racqueteers 4-8-60 to 1-3-64.

For the Cougars, No.1 man Ashley Hayward returned to form, defeating Ben Noonan 6-4 6-1.

No.2 Ben Robinson was too consistent for Sam McDonald, Baden Stevens continued his good form and Ashleigh Jolliffe won a three-setter against Cheryl Fitzpatrick.

Stella Johnston was the Racqueteers' only winner.

LADDER: Kangaroos 68 points, Cougars 51, Cats 38, Racqueteers 32, Blues 23, Tigers 22.
