The Victorian Football League last night confirmed its line up that will
face the Tasmanian State League in Hobart.
Sewell, a triple Roosters premiership player, was among the VFL’s best in its last interstate battle against Western Australia in 2010.
For Hoy (from Warrnambool) and Towers (Colac), Hobart will mark their state debuts.
Sewell (Newlyn) has been named in the centre, with Towers on the wing.
Hoy has been selected in the back pocket, alongside Collingwood captain Kris Pendlebury at full back.
Roosters coach Gerard FitzGerald said it was fantastic to have three Roosters named in the VFL line-up, with forward Billy Driscoll also named in the initial training squad.
“It’s an honour to be viewed by state selectors for our players to be good enough to play a role in the state team,” FitzGerald said. “They’ve done their club and region proud.”
FitzGerald will act as assistant to Port Melbourne’s reigning premiership coach Gary Ayres at the helm tomorrow.
The squad trained in Melbourne last night before final cuts were made.
FitzGerald said it was a highly productive session.
“The formalities were broken at training on Tuesday when there was a lot more of the formalities and introductions, so this session was much more normal,” FitzGerald said.
“Players are training with the best ... it was good method training focused on how the team can play as a club for one day.”
Ayres, speaking on metropolitan radio yesterday, was pleased with the line up he had assembled that drew on a recognised group of good VFL players, a few with AFL experience and some promising rising stars.
“It’s up to me to bring the guys together as quickly as I can,” Ayres said.
“I want them to play the style of football they know and are comfortable with.
“I encourage them to play with a little flair, depending on the conditions ...
‘‘I’m confident we can put it together, let the guys enjoy themselves and that will cover a lot of those technical things.”
Port Melbourne veteran skipper John Baird will captain the VFL team.
The 32-year-old is leading the VFL coaches’ player of the year award this season.
