NORTH Ballarat last night called up Nick Couch to make his VFL senior debut against Frankston at Frankston tomorrow.Couch replaces Cruize Garlett, who is a late inclusion to cover the loss of Levi Greenwood in the North Melbourne line-up to play Collingwood tonight. From Terang-Mortlake in the Hampden Football League and a former Geelong Falcon in the TAC Cup, he is in his first season with the Selkirk Roosters. He is a nephew of Geelong great and 1989 Brownlow Medallist Paul Couch. The 22-year-old agreed to join the Roosters after getting a phone call from North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald late last year.FitzGerald said Couch had shown a lot of poise in the reserves, averaging 25 touches and eight one percenters. In naming a replacement for Garlett, FitzGerald said it was important to find an inside midfielder to ensure the team structure did not change."It's a case of like-for-like."FitzGerald said Couch had also importantly shown a tendency to kick goals _ a feature of Garlett's game.Couch will be one of three Roosters making their VFL senior debut tomorrow. He joins ruckman and another first-year player Sam Conroy and classy North Ballarat Rebel Lucas Cook, who fills the role of 23rd man.North Ballarat was always going to have to introduce youth and inexperience this season and FitzGerald is pleased with the development of the players who have been given an opportunity at the top level as well as others still waiting in the wings."We have to look at a new batch, but we have to get it right."We will only maintain our high standards if our new group improves," he said. While having a group of inexperienced players did not worry him, FitzGerald said he would be warning his players to expect Frankston to be much tougher than its one win for the season indicated."There are two Frankstons. They're better at home," he said.FitzGerald said the Dolphins had highlighted this by pushing the unbeaten Sandringham early in the season and then beating Coburg when the Tigers were packed with Richmond players, including Ben Cousins.FitzGerald's biggest task will be covering the absence of ruckman Orren Stephenson. who has his biggest influence around the ground rather than as a pure tap ruckman.
