A BREAKTHROUGH win has buoyed confidence and offered relief for North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL.The reigning premier picked up its first premiership points of the season by 19 points against Werribee at Werribee on Saturday night.Victory, before a vocal Tigers army, comes after two heavy losses at home and a Foxtel Cup match against East Perth to open the Selkirk Roosters' 2011 campaign.Werribee dominated play, despite collecting 10 more possessions ? 390 to the Roosters' 380. However, the Tigers struggled to convert. The Roosters' defence, led by Lachie George and Matt Sharkey, clamped down and forced the Tigers to fumble.North Ballarat coach Gerard FitzGerald was pleased with his team's efficiency across the ground, particularly in defence."For the first time we were under our KPIs (key performance indicators) for defence," FitzGerald said."That was something we had focused on because we had been concerned with the ease of our opposition scoring goals."We were really pleased with our pressure across the ground and the way the players maximised pressure, time and space."Up forward, the Roosters found potent targets in Aaron Edwards and youngster Aaron Black. The straight-kicking North Melbourne-listed duo booted four goals apiece.Edwards' experience and influence about the goals sharpened the forward line.Black, in his first senior game back, added spark with four goals from four kicks.Signs were good early for the Roosters, with 5.1 to Werribee's 2.3 by quarter-time.The Roosters kicked their five goals after the half-way mark of the term but their structures were already in place and working.Orren Stephenson had control in the ruck while Oliver Tate and captain Marc Greig relentlessly drove the ball out of defence through the midfield.A fired-up Tigers outfit hit the ground after half-time to boot a goal within the opening minute and three before the Roosters replied. The Roosters replied with four unanswered goals to finish the quarter, including one after the siren, and took a 25-point lead into the final term.Werribee coach Paul Slatterley called for his forwards to get in front, but the Tigers lacked a strong target with Ben Warren, under close check by Matt Sharkey, the team's sole multiple goal kicker on two.North Ballarat closed out the match with 55 one-percenters and 25 tackles in the final quarter, statistics FitzGerald made clear to his players after the match.FitzGerald said it was vital his team keep building momentum, with another important clash against Collingwood at Victoria Park next week.
