RECRUIT Kevin White could hardly have looked more at home with the Ballarat Miners last night.
Although it was his first training session under Ballarat Holden Miners coach Guy Molloy, White already knew several of his new teammates, which made it an easy transition.
He is a former Sydney Kings teammate of Jared Scoines, and he also knows Dan Joyce, Ryan Barnes and Shaun Bruce.
Like Scoines, White has spent time as a development player with the Kings in the National Basketball League.
He has come straight from that program to Ballarat for the 2012 South East Australian Basketball League season.
What this means, though, is that White has not played week-in week-out since being with Manly in the Waratah Australian Basketball Association last year.
So for White, he cannot wait to get into action.
White said that although he is not in peak match fitness, being part of Sydney’s training regime meant there was no question about his general condition, seven weeks out from the start of the season.
The 24-year-old from Manly worked his way through junior representative ranks in New South Wales before pursuing the sport in the United States.
He spent three years with the University of Alaska Anchorage in the NCAA.
White is 189cm. His versatility allows him to play as a point guard, shooting guard or small forward.
Molloy said White’s versatility meant he would fit in well with the players on the Miners’ roster.
“Kevin is a quality combo guard/guard shooter, solid defender and excellent ball-handler.”
Molloy said he was pleased with the way his squad had launched into pre-season training.
He said there was a great deal of motivation within the group.
The Miners open their home and away season against Albury-Wodonga in Ballarat on Sunday, March 18.
