BALLARAT Rush forward Rachel Jarry was yesterday one of two Australians selected in the Women’s National Basketball Association draft in the United States.Jarry was taken by Atlanta with pick 18 and then traded to Minnesota Lynx. Her Bulleen teammate Liz Cambage was secured by Tulsa Shock with the number two selection in the draft. While Cambage will play in the WNBA this year, the good news for Ballarat is that Jarry will stay with Rush in the South East Australian Basketball League this season before lining up in the WNBA again.Auslec Rush assistant coach Sarah Monck confirmed late yesterday that Jarry would stay on with Rush for a second season.“It’s great news,” Monck said.“I have just spoken with Rachel and she’s staying.”Jarry plans to wait until after the 2012 London Olympic Games before embarking on a WNBA career.Jarry’s number one priority is to be selected in the Opals team for the Olympics and she believes staying in Australia gives her the best chance of achieving this. The 19-year-old earned selection in the Opals squad for the first time earlier this year after being part of Bulleen’s WNBL championship team.Jarry told The Age yesterday that she had spoken to Minnesota Lynx before the draft.“When we spoke Minnesota liked that idea as well,” she said.“I think the best thing will be to play in the WNBL again and develop my game,” she said. Jarry learnt of her selection in the draft and then trade via social network twitter.Monck said Rush had been aware of the interest in Jarry and they were excited for her.“It’s awesome news.”Monck said Jarry had caught the attention of WNBA scouts attending Bulleen games to see Cambage.“She was in the right place at the right time.”Jarry, who won the SEABL most valuable player award in her debut season with Ballarat last year, is yet to play a game with Rush this season. She has been sidelined with the effects of a knee injury suffered late in the WNBL season.Monck said Jarry had undergone minor surgery on Friday to clean up the troublesome knee and was confident of being fit for Rush’s next game against Bendigo on Saturday, April 30.Meanwhile, Ballarat is hopeful of signing a second restricted player within days.
