Racing Victoria puts end to jumps racing

27 Nov, 2009 02:54 PM
RACING Victoria Limited has announced the end of jumps racing.

Jumps racing will end in Victoria next year.

The board of RVL says a program of highweight races will be scheduled for 2011 to help jumps jockeys, trainers and horses go through the transition.

After giving jumps racing a 12-month lifeline in December, the RVL met this morning to release its findings on a report into last season's jumps racing.

Ballarat trainer Anthony Cosgriff, who has a stable which specialises in jumpers, is devastated by the decision.

''It's a huge blow to our business.''

He told The Courier he would have to re-assess his future in the racing industry.

Country Racing Victoria chief Scott Whiteman says the decision was ''unbelievable''.

''We are absolutely gutted by the decision and we can't believe it,'' Mr Whiteman told AAP.

RSPCA Victorian president Hugh Wirth says the animal rights group has battled against jumps racing since 1980.

''It's taken a long time, but this couldn't be better news,'' he told AAP.

It's about time this happened. We have been campaining for years for this horrendous sport to come to an end. Finally the message from the public has sunk in to Racing Victoria and hopefully anyone else involved in the sport. It's over!

The owners of these horses will be saddened that they cannot put their pets/investments at risk. Poor Country Racing Victoria, bring in more pokies and other gambling to subsidise employees salaries. Horse trainers will just have to diversify their activities to cope with changes. We all have to compromise at some stage in our lives or careers. Jump to it I say.

Yes the owners of those horses will be upset but look at least they won't be getting injured and/or put down all because of having some serious falls. Warrnambool will end up having a better carnival without the jumps racing. Most of those horses will probably go back to equestrian events and be good show horses.
