BALLARAT Pride coach Daniel Cook was impressed with the club’s defensive edge in opening pre-season bouts and said it was a good starting point.
Cook said UB Pride’s three new-look teams were far from perfect in shortened Victorian Netball League matches on Wednesday night but the plan was to be ready to go by round one.
Pride’s championship division team created more than a combined 60 turnovers across the court in two two-quarter matches – first against Western Lightning, then meeting VNL finalist North East Blaze at the State Netball Hockey Centre.
Cook said Pride’s game was riddled with silly mistakes that were the result of a completely new line-up under match intensity.
Promoted young goaler Jordyn Bibby held her own under the post in a four-goaler rotation that included the returning Georgia Cann, Amy Caldow and Hume recruit Kathryn Hard.
Danni Davidson led a solid defence alongside Warrnambool recruit Emma Wright.
Newly promoted division one captain Gina McCartin was vocal and confident in close matches with Lauren Quinlan impressing in a cool-headed game in defence.
Pride 19-unders were strong from the outset, winning both matches comfortably.
Cook said pre-season was all about fine-tuning, sorting teams, players settling into position and there were plenty of promising signs that Pride would keep improving.
Pride’s next pre-season fixture is another two half matches on Wednesday night with City West Falcons and Monash University.
