IT was a dark day for Ballarat bowls in the premier division on Saturday, with just one Ballarat side able to secure a win.
Only Central Wendouree was able to hold up Ballarat’s end of the bargain in the Ballarat District Bowls Division, with a comfortable win over fellow Ballarat side Webbcona.
The remaining Ballarat sides all went down to their Geelong-based opponents, with Sebastopol, Victoria and BMS all on the wrong end of defeats.
Central Wendouree’s victory on Saturday was arguably its best for the year, and was one in which it recorded an easy 113-88 victory on Webbcona’s greens.
It claimed three out of the four rinks in a dominant display, with only a stunning last bowl of the day from Webbcona skipper Ash McArthur preventing a clean sweep for the fixture.
Bears skipper Col Wright said his side was determined heading into the match, having been stung by Victoria on its home turf last week.
“We had a bit of a point to prove, especially after last week,” he said.
“Everybody came together well and it was a really good win for the club.”
Central Wendouree now sits eighth on the premier division ladder, but has not ruled itself out of finals contention yet.
It sits 23 points off a top-four position but faces a string of powerful sides in its run home.
“If we play like we did on Saturday, we are certainly in with a chance of making finals, that’s for sure,” said Wright.
“We haven’t given away the possibility of making the top four and our hopes are still alive.”
The Bears return to their home green to meet Sebastopol next week, in what is a must-win match for both clubs.
