CONGRATULATIONS to Brian Gallagher and Rhonda Armstrong, winners of the Ballarat District Bowls Division 60-plus singles championships. They will compete in the region finals at Mount Xavier Bowling Club on Thursday, November 3. The BDBD men’s fours championship was won by Col Wright, John Nunn, Greg Brown and Garry Carbury of Central Wendouree, who defeated Noel Sutherland, Mick Morgan, Scott Roberts and Ian Warner from the Sebastopol Bowling Club 19 shots to 10. Meanwhile, The Courier Shield side for Sunday, November 6 at Bacchus Marsh Bowling Club is: (1) A Rimmington, W Pattie, A Kinniburgh, A McArthur. (2) A Panther, M. Morgan, B. Oates, I Warner. (3) L Wood, B Adams, B Mahoney, G Carbury. (4) K Coad, P Clamp, T. Wood, S Cornock. Emergencies: J Sergi, P Goldsmith. The bus is to leave Webbcona Bowls Club at 7.45am sharp. Bowlers are reminded it’s a good idea to carry three bowls to pennant. If a player has to leave the match, then two bowlers in the team need to have three bowls to continue playing. Twenty-five per cent of the shots scored while playing with the three bowlers is then deducted from the final score. Don’t forget the delegates meeting to be held at Mt. Xavier Bowling Club at 7.30pm today (Wednesday). Weekend pennant wash-outMOTHER nature took some revenge on the weekend, with only 14 matches achieving results. Most of the results sheets indicated that matches had started, but were washed out before the required 45/60 ends. For those that did finish, the close scores were Midlands by eight in division nine, Avenue by nine in division four and Learmonth by 10 in division one. The big winners were Linton by 30 in division three, Clunes by 34 in division four, and top dogs Linton by 56 in division seven. Rod Lindsay’s tipsSOME away side tips this week will extend the odds and hopefully provide some play money for Tuesday, November 1. Ballarat North travels to Daylesford in division two for a fifth-plays-sixth match, but will be denied a win as Daylesford stays in touch with the top four. Fifth also plays sixth in division three, and Central Wendouree at home should account for Webbcona. Midlands Golf should retain second position on the ladder by beating visitors Avenue in division four. City Oval at home in division five will have a win over BMS. Sebastopol travels to Midlands Golf in division six and should win and keep top spot. Second meets third when Ballan goes to Central Wendouree in division seven; the visitors for a win here. In division eight, top side Ballarat North should win an away match at Daylesford.Central Wendouree will cement its top position in division nine by defeating second side Ballarat East on the Gregory St rinks. Midweek pennantA GREAT week has just passed in the Monday pennant and first midweek championships.Monday pennant clubs are settling and teams are playing well, as the ladder shows all clubs participating this season are matched. It must be up to the match committees and of course the players. The weather was not so good and some clubs were affected by wet closures. Synthetic was used if available. Clubs are asked to be aware of safety on wet surfaces and abandon games if the risk is too great. The three days of 60s-and-over singles were played in a great spirit and were great to watch.Day one was at City Oval on both greens and synthetic, while for day two at Victoria the new green was in action. Wind was very tricky for all participants. The final day at City Oval was threatened by weather. The grass green was closed and play was on the synthetic, which was running well.Semi-finals were won by Rhonda Armstrong and Lyn Maple and were closely contested by each. The final was won by Rhonda Armstrong. After being just behind, she played several great conversion shots over the last few ends, giving her the victory over a very strong opponent.Lyn scored 21-17. Both players had great support from their clubs, Smeaton and Central Wendouree. Deputy BDBD chair Marilyn Blake marked the final game, with representation by BDBD chair Kevin Lafranchi from Smeaton Bowls Club, who was proud of Armstrong’s win.It was the fifth time a Smeaton woman has won the event. The novice event first day is on October 30 at Webbcona. Names are as listed in last week’s column. Day two is on November 6 and players will be listed later.A ‘Try Bowls’ day was held on October 23. Clubs are encouraged to give their feedback. Nora Thornhill’s predictionsCENTRAL Wendouree Red will win at home against Creswick in division one; Sebastopol Gold will triumph away in a close one against Creswick in division two; Clunes will defeat home side City Oval in division three; BMS will win at home against Linton in division four; Mount Xavier will defeat home side Victoria in division five; and Midlands will win at home against Ballarat North in division six.
