PETER Goldsmith has proved himself as one of the best bowlers in Ballarat – and he doesn’t even play in the top division.
Waubra’s Goldsmith took out the Ballarat District Bowls Division Champion of Champions title last week.
It was the second time he has been crowned Ballarat champion, having previously taken out the honour for the 2008-09 season.
He is one of just two Waubra bowlers to have ever won the title – the other being his cousin William “Billy” Harrison in 1999-2000.
Despite the massive accolade, Goldsmith has no intention of ever moving to another club in the hope of playing division one, or possibly even premier division.
He has bowled at Waubra for 25 years, which currently only has sides in divisions two and six.
However, Goldsmith says he could not imagine playing at another club. He is Waubra through and through.
As well as being arguably the best bowler at the club, he has also been a voluntary greenkeeper at the club for nine years.
Although he spends between six and eight hours preparing the green each week, Goldsmith does not believe he has an advantage over other competitors come competition day.
“Some days, you would even think it hurts my performance the way I bowl sometimes,” he joked.
“But I’m very happy out here. It’s a very tight-knit club.
“It’s only small but everyone knows each other well which is one of the strengths.”
Even before his bowls days, Goldsmith says he was part of the Waubra bowls club.
His father won a number of club championships and as a younger man playing tennis next door, Goldsmith always kept one eye on the proceedings on the bowls greens.
He starting playing bowls in his mid-thirties, at what he said was a relatively young age at the time.
“These days guys are starting to play at a younger age, which I think is great for the game,” said Goldsmith.
In a career full of highlights, Goldsmith has been one of Waubra’s best bowlers for years, along with his cousin, Harrison.
Goldsmith took out club champion titles in 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012, two of which he turned into Champion of Champions trophies.
“It’s a real honour to have been one of only two guys to have taken it out,” he said.
For now, Goldsmith is focused on trying get Waubra promoted to division one, where it sat for two years early last decade.
