Future of midweek pennant bowls to be decided

31 Jan, 2012 11:15 PM
THE fate of Monday pennant bowls will be decided tonight.

A request from Central Wendouree to move the pennant to Tuesday will be determined at tonight’s Ballarat District Bowls Division delegates meeting, with representatives from every club due to cast a vote.

If the motion is successful, it will end the pennant’s 20-year history as a Monday competition.

BDBD deputy chairperson Marilyn Blake said the move was suggested to give the greens a rest following the Saturday pennant, allowing the greenkeepers to do their maintenance on a Monday.

The greens are also heavily used on Sundays for championships and tournaments.

“It came about over a letter submitted by one of the clubs that we change our day to Tuesday,” she said.

“The letter came to the board and the board put it out for clubs to vote on.”

The motion has been put to 23 clubs, each with one vote.

Critics of the motion are concerned shifting the day would lead to a drop in mid-week numbers.

“It would exclude some people from playing pennant in mid-week,” Blake said.

“A lot of them work and they take Monday off and a lot play golf on Tuesday.

“We’re trying to retain numbers not lose them.”

Blake said similar votes held in the past had failed to win votes.

She said the outcome of tonight’s meting would be “extremely important” to the future of the competition.

“I’ve had a few indications but certainly I wouldn’t hazard a guess to what’s going to happen,” she said.

The meeting will be held at Midlands Golf Bowling Club at 7pm.

I am curious about one aspect of this story, the headline refers to midweek bowls. How can it be midweek bowls if held on a Monday. Hope it gets up
