BALLARAT Pride was blown away in a first-half blitz by Victorian Netball League powerhouse Southern Saints last night.
UB Pride trailed their championship clash 33-17 at half-time, and despite showing plenty of grit in the third and fourth quarters, dropping just six more goals, Saints controlled the match for a 60-38 victory.
Goaler Catherine Maika was again in impressive form for Pride, netting 34 (89 per cent) of the team's goals in roles alongside Kathryn Vickers and Bree Hanslow.
Ballarat co-captain Mel Martinelli said Pride used a total of nine players throughout the match, and tried some different combinations across the court.
She said her team was forced into errors and turnovers due to the intense pressure from the Saints girls, but was impressed with some parts of the Pride game.
"I would say that skills-wise there was passages of play that were very good and strong," she said.
"Similar to Saturday night (against North East Blaze) - when we let the ball go and stick to our structures we are very capable - it's just maintaining that."
Martinelli said some players still needed to work on their match fitness to be able to sustain intensity throughout the match.
"Even though we have had the three losses, the girls are very united and there is spirit there. The girls are very determined," Martinelli said.
An ankle injury to Vickers, sustained late in the match, is not thought to be serious.
Ballarat Pride will take on Monash University Central next Wednesday night.
