Badminton champ Erin is out with flu - and has eight days to get better

A BOUT of the flu has interrupted Ballarat badminton player Erin Carroll's Olympic preparations.

Carroll was a late withdrawal from yesterday's Kuala Lumpur Racquet Club Australian International opening rounds.

The 22-year-old pulled out of her women's singles clash against Western Samoan Heseti Mafaufau half an hour before her scheduled start.

Australian Badminton Olympic team manager and Ballarat Badminton manager Rhonda Cator said Carroll was disappointed not to play but had to put her Olympic priorities first.

"The doctor advised her to get over it before she boards the plane for Beijing," Cator said.

"She could play but make it worse. She has eight days to really pick herself up."

Carroll has been based in Melbourne since her late call-up to the Australian Olympic squad three weeks ago.

Earlier this week, she said how much she was relishing the chance to put the final touches on her Olympic campaign in her hometown.

The Australian International was to be her final competitive hit-out before contesting the women's singles in Beijing.

A Dana St Primary School grade one and two cheer squad had hoped to watch its adopted Olympic hero in action yesterday and instead got behind Australian team member Stuart Gomez, who will contest the men's singles in Beijing.

Grade one pupil Seth Pegg first chose to write to Carroll because she barracked for AFL team St Kilda.

"I told her good luck for the Olympics," Seth said.

"The badminton's been pretty good - how they hit it so high and fast.

"Sometimes players have to jump and sometimes they play near the net and do short hits."

The $15,600 KLRC Australian International has attracted about 170 entries, with top competition from countries including Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Austria, Scotland, Mexico England and Malaysi.

The tournament is the biggest international badminton event held in Australia outside the Olympics and Commonwealth games.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
