Bursting with (Ballarat) Pride again

6/08/2008 12:51:00 AM
MENTAL toughness - check. Composure - check. Sharp moves - check.

Ballarat Pride was back in blistering form at the State Netball and Hockey Centre last night.

Two weeks of struggling form were buried when Pride demolished Palladians by 25 goals in Netball Victoria's state league division one.

A slow opening five minutes had Pride pencilled in for another potential shocker.

Then a little bit of confidence and focus morphed into a 56-31 goal finish.

Ballarat Pride captain Emma Farrell praised her teammates for using their own initiative to turn the first quarter around.

"We started making the right choices," Farrell said.

"We became more composed and we were playing more patiently.

"We started playing the brand of netball we were there to play."

Defeating Palladians was a major mental hurdle for Pride.

In their last encounter, Palladians lured Pride into a fast, flashy game which left Pride stunned by 16 goals.

This time, Palladians stumped Pride early with slow, deliberate passing.

Once Pride cracked the predictable pattern, Palladians ran out of options.

"Mentally it was really tough," Farrell said.

"Their game threw us a bit because we were expecting something a lot faster and got a bit too excited at the start.

"Just knowing we had lost the last two games and that Palladians beat us last time added pressure.

"We definitely didn't talk about that too much before the game.

"Now we've got confidence back we need to take that with us over the next five weeks into finals."

Farrell said the win was a team effort flowing from a strong defensive intercepts to sharp, direct drives into the goal circle.

Goal keeper Kate McLeod starred in defence alongside Simone Segrave with Johanna Dash, Kate Schippers and Melissa Beaston crumbing on the edge of the circle.

McLeod's trademark aerial work was inspirational in picking up rebounds for her team to devour.

Sharp shooter Sue Nalder was back in the goal circle for three quarters with 87 per cent accuracy after battling the flu the past fortnight. Pride's bus trip back down the Western Fwy was a happy ride but there is still plenty of work to do at home with two rounds left to cement a finals spot and build consistency again.
