BALLARAT mountain bike jockey Marcus Fairbanks has put himself in the front row for selection for the Australian junior team at the Downhill Mountain bike World Championships later this year.
Fairbanks finished second of the Australian junior riders at round one of the Downhill MTB World Cup at Maribor in Slovenia last weekend, with a time of 3min 53 seconds on the rough, super-fast 2.5km course.
The top seven Australian juniors, based on national and international races over the coming months, will qualify for the national team to represent Australia at the MTB World Championships in Quebec in September.
Fairbanks, who arrived back in Australia on Thursday, said the result at Maribor had encouraged him to contest the third round of the six round World Cup series, in Leogang in Austria on June 20.
"If I had a similar result in Austria I think that would go a long way towards selection with the Australian team,'' Fairbanks said.
"Of course, I'd like to do better than that.
"They don't announce selection until the day after the third World Cup round. "The selectors have the right to decide who is in the team but international events like the World Cup count for more than national events.''
Fairbanks finished fourth in juniors behind fellow Australian Troy Brosnan from Adelaide, George Branagan from New Zealand and Mark Scott from Great Britain.
That result translated as 102nd overall out of 256 of the best downhill mountain bike riders around the globe.
"I am happy with that. I had three crashes on my run and was five seconds off Troy (Brosnan),'' he said.
