Four BFL presidents stand firm

28 Jun, 2005 10:50 PM
AT LEAST four presidents of Ballarat Football League clubs are expected to stand their ground today in opposition to the North Ballarat Junior Football Club.

The presidents yesterday said they would not budge on the NBJFC issue, despite BFL chief executive officer Rod Ward having asked them to re-think their determined stance last week.

Mr Ward put out the request as he raised fears that a relocated NBJFC could pose a greater threat to clubs than it would if it competed in the BFL.

Ballarat-based clubs, plus Daylesford, were given until today to respond to the RegionalOne BFL.

The presidents who told The Courier yesterday that their club would not change their position were Sebastopol's George McIntosh, East Point's Gerard O'Keefe, Daylesford's Rob Millar, and Ballarat's

Shane Manley.

"We believe it's a dead issue," Mr Manley said.

"We can't see any reason why the league should re-visit it."

Mr O'Keefe said.

"The status quo remains as far as we're concerned," he said.

"Our club has been through the heartache of a merger.

"We don't want any other club to have to go through the same thing, which we believe would happen if the North Ballarat junior club was admitted into the BFL."

As of late last night, Redan and Lake Wendouree had not reached a decision.

A change of heart among the clubs could result in the BFL board overturning its decision to deny the NBJFC entry into the senior ranks of the league.

"We're just waiting to see what tomorrow brings," Mr Ward said yesterday.

"Then we'll know how the clubs feel and then board members will have some idea whether or not they will have to get back together to reconsider the matter."

NBJFC president Paul Leahy said his club had little interest in today's outcome.

He said progress had already been made on the push to enter either the Geelong or Bendigo football leagues.

"We've already had responses from both of the leagues," Mr Leahy said.

"They acknowledged in a positive way the expression of interest we put forward."
