Junior player honoured by Hawthorn scholarship

27 Apr, 2005 10:44 PM
GOLDEN Point Junior Football Club player Andrew Hooper will spend a week with the Hawthorn Football Club later this year.

The 14-year-old was one of 10 Victorians to be granted the honour when he was awarded a `High Marks' youth scholarship yesterday.

The 2004 Ballarat Junior Football League Robert Allen Medal best and fairest winner will take part in a series of sessions to promote good nutrition, positive life choices, physical activity, and responsible driving.

He will be mentored in a buddy-system by a high-profile Hawthorn player who understands the focus needed to achieve in sport and other endeavours.

The scholarship winners, who were aged between 14 and 16 years, were selected as much for their personal attributes as their sporting ability.

Hooper, who plays in the Golden Point under-15 team, said he was thrilled to be chosen.

"I was excited and jumping around for a long time," he said.

"When I got the letter from the Hawks, I was very pleased."

Hooper was formerly captain of Golden Point's under-12 and under-13 grades, and was vice-captain of the Ballarat schoolboys' side that finished second at the WorkSafe under-15 championships in Melbourne earlier this month.

Hooper would like to achieve a career at AFL level eventually, and, despite barracking for Richmond, would be happy to play for any club.
