THE Lady Miners will play the Australian under-19 squad in Ballarat's biggest pre-Commonwealth Games basketball event at the Minerdome on Wednesday night.
The Gems' line-up, which boasts rising stars Kathleen Macleod and Renae Camino, is set to push the home team to its limits, testing its speed, skill and intensity.
The timing of the clash could not be better for the Ballarat Community Health Lady Miners.
After slumping to their third consecutive South East Australian Basketball League loss against Knox on Saturday, they are desperate to regain their 15-straight, match-winning sparkle.
The opportunity to take on a top-quality team outside regular competition will allow them to experiment with combinations and tactics.
"We always need to have something different up our sleeves," playing-coach Kym Cassells said.
In the meantime, the Ballarat Lady Miners are determined to send Launceston, sixth, further down the ladder tomorrow night.
To maintain their grip on the top rung heading into finals, they must win all three remaining matches.
Ballarat is to meet North West Tasmania on Friday, July 16, and Frankston on Sunday, July 24.
A play-off against arch-rival Knox undoubtedly awaits.
The Lady Miners are also conscious of maintaining their physical well-being.
With Allison Tranquilli sidelined through a hamstring injury, and Desiree Glaubitz nursing a slight quadricep strain, they cannot afford to lose another player.
Cassells said her charges would benefit from a new sponsorship agreement with Body&Soul Health and Fitness studio.
"At this stage of the season, players' physical condition is paramount," she said.
