Representative team falters on final ends

29 Nov, 2005 10:07 PM
THE BENDIGO District Bowls Association won the Grigsby-Pethard shield for the 35th time at the Webbcona Bowls Club on Sunday.

A disappointing finish saw the Ballarat Regional side, which led from the opening ends until very late in the day, falter to drop vital shots.

The shield returned to Bendigo by a margin of just four shots.

The BRBA side last won the shield in 2002 and is now 11 wins behind the Bendigo association in the 59 years of competition.

Each association had six teams of four and played 12 ends in the morning followed by 25 ends in the afternoon against different teams.

For the BRBA, the best performed team comprised Webbcona's Barry Clark (skipper) and Wayne Lynch, Sebastopol's Mick Sloper, and Buninyong's Nick Avery.

For Bendigo, its best team was skippered by Peter Loe.

Results (skipper names only): M. Flapper 13-9, 17-27; A. Cook 15-8, 21-32; T. Vallance 7-14, 30-18; S. Britt 9-18, 27-18; G. Brown 13-7, 15-27; B. Clark 12-6, 24-23.

Shield results

Afternoon: Bendigo 145 to Ballarat 134.

Shield: Bendigo and District 207 def Ballarat Regional 203.

BALLARAT defeated Bendigo in a round robin junior event at Webbcona on Sunday.

It was the Ballarat juniors who retained the title, winning 110 -77.

Junior sides of 12 players represented each association.

Jim Waight and his junior committee are thrilled with the way the juniors are progressing with the inter-association matches an important part of their development.

Ballarat won each of the three rounds, 34 shots to 30, 35-26, and 41-21.

Members of Team One for Ballarat was Matt Conroy, Daniel Nester, Michael Jose and Zac Marshall (skipper).

Marshall's team won 10-9, 12-5 and 15-8 to win the Bendigo Trophy as Ballarat's best team with a score of 15 up.

The Ballarat Trophy for the best Bendigo team went to Jordan Finlayson, Aaron Wilson, Jarrod Mason and Matthew Wilson.

Members of Ballarat's Team Two were Daniel Wood, Luke Karslake, Grant Bourke and Matthew Innes (skipper).

Innes' side lost its first game 9-13 but then impressed with two wins - 14-11 and 17-4.

Team three, of Ben McArthur, Luke Whitehead, Blake Asker and Beau Adams (skipper), won its first game 15-8, lost its second game 9-10 and tied its third at 9 all.

BRBA Country Sides travelled to Talbot Bowling Club where they played a fourth representative game against the Midlands Bowls Association.

After winning the first three occasions on which the McKechnie-Taylor shield was contested, the BRBA side found the Midlands side too good and could only manage one winning team out of the five games played.

Midlands Association 137 defeated BRBA Country Sides 96.

Results: D. Draffin lost to P. Adcock 15-28; R. Callahan d J. Simmons 26-18; W. Shillito lost to M. Peart 16-31; G. Jenkins lost to D. Pearce 16-36; and B. Molloy lost to C. Williams 23-24.

Daylesford Bowling Club members Eric Robinson, Len Davies, Leon Hedwards and Rod Callahan (skipper) were the best team for the BRBA side, scoring 26-18.

AN INCORRECT calculation was made to the ladder for the BRBA Premier Division which appeared in The Courieron Monday.

The correct ladder is Highton 99 pts, Geelong West 89, Victoria 87, Sebastopol 86 (+50), which make up the four followed by Webbcona 88 (+46), Queenscliff 75, Central Wendouree 74, Belmont 63, Ocean Grove 33, Avenue 28.
