SURFIE Pete will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of the Burrumbeet Cup in a decade at the New Year's Day race meeting on Sunday.
The top weight is out to emulate Bicker's Court, which took out the cup three years in a row from 1994.
From the Ballarat stable of Darren Weir, Surfie Pete has 58kg in the six-horse field - the same weight he carried in the race 12 months ago.
However, a three kilogram claim by apprentice jockey Sebastian Murphy will make the seven-year-old's task much easier.
Skalaad will get the biggest weight advantage though.
Dowling Forest-based trainer Terry Kelly has put Chris Nicoll on the grey, which will get down to 51.5kg with a 4kg claim.
Just two of the original nominations - Surfie Pete and Bigtime Charlie - accepted for the $10,000 James and Son Burrumbeet Cup.
The balance of the field in Yonnie, Skalaad, Gradabra and Berries Galore were all late entries. Kyneton seven-year-old Yonnie has been on the cups' trail in southern New South Wales and northern Victoria.
The gelding was third in the Hay Cup, 1600m, and had a win in the Moulamein Cup, 1600m, with a third to Rural Law and Surfie Pete in the Kerang Cup, 1800m, on Monday.
Burrumbeet Park and Windemere Racing Club has programmed six races, with the first to be run at 2.20pm and last at 5.35.
