IT’S time to shine for some of Ballarat’s best deaf athletes. The Australian Deaf Games are now under way in Geelong and eight deaf Ballarat athletes are currently in action representing Victoria. The athletes are playing a total of six different sports – golf, netball, ten pin bowling, bowls, darts and beach volleyball. For Marnie Kerridge, it will be an action-packed week as she competes as the captain of the Victoria Victory netball team, in addition to her mixed netball and beach volleyball duties. It is the fourth time she has competed at the deaf games, which are held every four years.Fellow deaf games veterans Paul Bourke (golf) and Mick Moneghetti (darts) will also be striving for gold, in what will be their third Australian Deaf Games competition.Bourke has been crowned the Victorian deaf golf champion four times.Jaqui Mellington, 18, will also represent the state in netball but, in an unusual occurrence, she won’t play alongside her fellow Ballarat netballers Carly and Brittany Sanders, both of whom will represent the Western Australian team due to the full Victorian team. The games will continue to run for the rest of the week, with the closing ceremony to be held on Saturday night.
