Labor MP sunk after lie

03 Sep, 2010 10:26 AM
The father whose question at a community forum led to outrage at a Queensland Labor MP two days before the federal election has admitted he lied.

Jon Sullivan lost the seat of Longman, north of Brisbane, after holding it by 4.3 per cent.

He made national headlines on election eve after he questioned why Robert Murphy would wait two years for his disabled son to see a specialist.

However, it was revealed today that Mr Murphy had not been honest during the radio public forum that led to the debacle.

His family had not waited two years for help, as he claimed.

Mr Murphy went on ABC Radio this morning to explain why he lied.

"I thought it was [two years]," Mr Murphy said.

"I mistakenly said it happened over two years.

"I didn't plan [the question], I didn't think it through properly. I shouldn't have said what I said."

Mr Murphy said the time period was his only fib and his son, Bailey, did have a disability for which he had waited to seek help.

When asked if he accepted he may have contributed to Mr Sullivan's loss, Mr Murphy apologised.

"If I am blamed for it, I do apologise. But it wasn't my intention," Mr Murphy said.

He said he did not mean to embarrass Mr Sullivan.

"I just needed a bit of a hand, not only just for my son but for hundreds of other people that are the sort of similar situation where they don't know who to go to or who to turn to to get help, to make sure that they can get help for their children.''

Labor had reportedly expected to win the seat of Longman, believing the 20-year-old LNP candidate Wyatt Roy's age would count against him at the polls.

Mr Sullivan's response to Mr Murphy drew immediate scorn from the audience and made front page headlines the following day.

"It's taken two years to take my son to the doctor to get him diagnosed because we don't have the money to actually go and pay a specialist ... so that he can get the proper help that he needs at school," Mr Murphy said.

Mr Sullivan replied: "What parent would wait two years to get a child who they believe has a disability ... "

Mr Roy won the seat with a 3.87 per cent swing.

These people will stoop so low to win a seat. i think this should go further, as to me it sounds like a smear against Mr Sullivan.I lived in longman for 10ears and was really aghast when i realised this young man who looks like a child , will serve the people of longman. What were the people thinking? Was Mr Murphy a planted trouble maker. A damn shame i say. Take it further bet you there is more to this story.

It is hard enough for people who have children that have atypical needs without people like this making it worse. Some people actually have legitimate claims that they have not received fair and equitable treatment; fools like this diminish there perceived legitimacy and thus the chances of a productive outcome. This man should be ashamed, his actions are disgusting. The fact that people voted based on information that was never true is also a sad indictment of the average Australian voter. But based on a lie this electorate has voted in Australia's least experienced politician.

I disagree with Pox in that Mr Murphy is a bloody idiot. I believe Mr Murphy is a very clever, manipulating person who understands other peoples' vulnerability and gullibility. The bloody idiots are the people who let their emotions run away with them before putting their brains into gear and having a bit of a think before reacting. Maybe through this these people will get the inferior government they deserve, and be a bit more scrutinising next time.

During this election campaign, when one examines "close up" in TV interviews, the eyes of the Prime Minister and the eyes of the Liberal Leader by as some insightful journalists ask the question, (Its the question, stupid) you always feel a kind of misleading impression, not a lie, but a kind of answer compromising a simple, truthful answer. We experienced this kind of thing over budget honesty.

I think the time was up for Mr. Sullivan long before his remark at the Forum. Speaking with friends and contacts the week before his remark I was amazed at the number who were happy to give Wyatt a go even though my area has a very large population of oldies. There were happy faces at a community group I attend when voting was going the way it did. I have no connection to Wyatt or to any particular political party. It would be nice to have some fresh faces and ideas in politics after all this is 2010.
