Common sense may prevail with licensing laws

23 Feb, 2010 11:13 PM
PREMIER John Brumby's announcement yesterday morning that he would seek a watering-down of new liquor licensing laws is a win for common sense.

The laws were designed to combat issues around binge drinking and violence at late-night venues in the state.

As a consequence, though, many venues that don't contribute to the problem - in particular live music venues, wineries, bottle shops and some regional hotels - were unduly affected.

Some reported extravagant increases in operational costs that they were never going to be able to recoup unless they passed them on directly to patrons.

That was never the intention of the legislation.

Those operators who campaigned to have the laws changed will be pleased to see their concerns have been heard, in part at least.
