IT IS unfortunate that we appear to have too many people within our midst who consider it reasonable to steal from those less fortunate.
This week, we have seen two incidents where the hard work of people prepared to help the needy has been vandalised.
BEST Community Development is spending more than $1million turning the former Golden Point Primary school into a cultural and learning centre for the community's benefit.
At the weekend, vandals smashed windows and splashed paint across its walls.
There is no other word for this behaviour than stupid. Police have cautioned a teenager over the matter, but it remains unclear whether charges will be laid against other people.
In a separate incident, tools and gardening equipment were stolen from Ballarat Regional Industries.
This is a respected Ballarat organisation where the bulk of staff are people with a disability.
While the Golden Point attack appears random, the BRI one would seem to be more organised.
Police believe a truck and trailer were used to remove stolen items.
It is beyond the comprehension of right-minded citizens as to why anyone would steal from an organisation as worthy as BRI.
When the offenders are charged, the community will expect the judicial system to impose a penalty that reflects the disdain in which it holds such offences.
Let us hope that happens sooner rather than later.
Unparliamentary behaviour is not on
SPEAKING of unacceptable behaviour, many have been appalled by the ongoing antics of NSW MP John Della Bosca and wife Belinda Neal, a federal MP.
Carry-on during question time in parliament is one thing (though we'd love to see that reflect community standards too) but bringing those bullying tactics into the public is not on.
There has been much too-ing and fro-ing about what exactly happened at the Iguanas bar in Sydney. Whatever the case, there is a pattern of bad behaviour from both.
The public deserves better from our elected representatives.
