Beware of cold-call solar panel operators

Beware of cold-call solar panel operators

03 Feb, 2012 11:50 AM
I WRITE to inform The Courier readership of the possible pitfalls arising from agreeing to install solar panel systems from cold-call operators.

I have recently dealt with householders who have been given misleading information and have not been advised of the potential loss of tariff benefits they currently enjoy.

These could disappear if they take up the offers being made.

From 2012 onwards this is of particular concern to those that have existing slab heating. My advice is don't be pressured into making a quick decision.

There are any number of experienced local installers who have the best interest of customers when giving advice, and are not focused on getting a quick sale.

Local operators are familiar with the local distributor (Powercor) and their tariff arrangements.

They are careful with panel location, avoiding west and east facing roofs and are also mindful of shading issues, as any inferior installations stand as a permanent bad advertisement for their company.

If you are contacted from an out-of-town operator you would be best served to seek a second opinion from a local before you make up your mind.

There are quite a few small things to look for, even with the electricity companies. It can take several weeks and in some instances months before you get your Smart Meter installed, and once it is installed it can take up to six months for the Smart Meter installer (In my case SP AUSnet) to pass on the old meter reading to my electrity provider. I finished up two bills in arears and after eventually taking the case to the Energy and Water Ombudsman a settlement was negotiated with my electricy provider. Nine months after the solar installation.
