Turbine rule change too late for many

I WISH to respond to the editorial of August 30 re your comments about the state government's changes to the planning provisions of construction of wind turbines. Whilst I applaud the measures taken by the Minister for Planning Mr Matthew Guy to protect residents who live within 2km of the nearest turbine, there are still issues that need to be addressed. The plight of people who live within the 2km distance of the already approved wind farms such as the West Wind Energy Facility in the Moorabool Shire is extremely concerning and unfair. I live in an area where 150m turbines will be placed barely 1000 metres from my dwelling. This means that, because the permit was granted just before the Brumby government went into caretaker mode, I and many others like me will be subjected to the same distressing side effects as the residents at Waubra. How can it be fair not to make the changes retrospective when there is so much anecdotal evidence in Australia and all over the world reporting adverse health effects experienced by people living too close to the turbines? Are the NYH and MRC recommendations which were part of the outcome of the recent Senate Enquiry into the Social and Economic effects of Rural Wind Farms to be ignored?Lastly, would all the people who blithely say that the illnesses the people affected adversely are suffering from are all in their imaginations, be willing to live beside the wind energy facilities? Who would willingly walk away from their homes, properties, businesses and lifestyles? There are many ways apart from questionably-efficient wind turbines to produce clean, green energy and all governments would do well to work together to combine their collective skills and knowledge instead of making the problem of producing renewable and unsustainable energy a political issue.ANGELA KEARNSBallan
