Unnecessarily high fees set for vet medication

08 Feb, 2012 02:04 PM
I recently took my dog, which had suffers from a chronic condition that requires medication every year, to a veterinary clinic .

We found that the medication sold overseas via the internet was about half as expensive as it is here.

After our consultation, I asked for a written prescription and was told it would cost $25 just to write a script on a piece of paper. I argued that this was a ridiculously high fee and the vet kindly reduced the amount to $15 . They practice has reduced the script fee to $15 .

I was also told that any medication needed for an animal can only be purchased from the vet treating the animal.

We should have a choice as to where we can buy our medication, if you can buy it cheaper elsewhere , you should be able to do so.

The price of medication for companion animals is ridiculously high because Australia is a small market.

I contacted an Australian company that sells the same medication cheaply online overseas but we Australians are not able to buy from them.
