What happened to fibre optics NBN promised?

What happened to fibre optics NBN promised?

06 Feb, 2012 03:59 PM
THE National Broadband Network (NBN) wants to construct a radiation tower for wireless communications close to our homes in Dereel.

This is happening right around the outskirts of Ballarat.

NBN was sold to Australians as the new super-fast fibre-optic cables laid in the ground alongside existing phone lines, which is safe.

NBN doesn't want to give us this superior service, but instead they want to put up a tower that pulses microwave radiation out at the public for wireless connections which costs $200,000, is slower, not safe, won't tell us the monthly service cost, and will be used for smart meter radiation.

NBN Co's radiation expert, Michael Bangay from Radhaz Consulting, cannot show us any research that proves this radiation is safe.

Wireless broadband is being taken out overseas due to health problems, yet the telecommunications industry here is still putting them in.

We have made the government aware of the hundreds of independent scientific research studies showing adverse health effects, together with a lot of people who suffer because of the radiation penetrating their bodies, but authorities still refuse to acknowledge it, even after the World Health Organisation's warning in May, 2011, that radio-frequency radiation is now classified as a 2B carcinogen.

NBN Co's CEO Mike Quigley said: "We really do not have another option other than providing a satellite service", in response if councils reject its microwave radiation tower proposals.

We would be happy with "satellite connections" which many residents already have and which works well.

The McClelland's bizarre website fear-mongering "radiation" cellphone towers and smart meters must set a record for the number of mistakes, misunderstandings, misrepresentations, and pseudo-scientific bunk collected in one place.

Heat, magnetism, electricity, and radio of all frequencies and energies, even the Internet(!), are all simply lumped together as the enemy (yet satellite radiation is mysteriously acceptable).

The site also advertises and promotes expensive detectors and protective paint.

Im not to sure about the radiation emmited from these towers, but im angry that communities were led to believe they would receive fibre optic cabeling and are not.

Where is Cath King on this issue? Basically areas with optic fibre now will keep it, but the rest of us get a second class service.

If we want a country with no city / country divide and growth in all regions this cable must be laid now.

Yes Mick.

A real reason to argue for fiber over wireless is not some bogus nonsense about radiation, but because fiber should provide greater bandwidth now, and be much more future-proof in terms of bandwidth upgrade later.

Speaking as someone who lives in Dereel I can say that Wendy McClelland does not represent the majority of residents here. We want the NBN tower and we welcome the services it will bring to our area. Wendy has clearly never used satellite Internet service and clearly doesn't understand anything about how latency affects broadband services. The vast majority of Dereel residents fully understand why we can't have fibre (it is many times more expensive than wireless) and the price of wireless NBN plans is known - it is identical to fibre service, as already published by many ISPs.

I get tired of the "Wendy McClelland" show! It's fine to have an opinion but don't make out that you are speaking for the majority of Dereel. Out of the 600+ residents, how many are actually against the tower? Not as many as you think.
