AIDS orphans in Africa are being supplied warm knitted quilts thanks to the efforts of a group of women from the Ballarat region.

The women, who are all patients of a Wendouree medical clinic, started knitting the squares while waiting for appointments with their doctor.
The waiting-room knit-fest has since extended to knitting at home, where a core group of 15 women have together knitted more than 1200 squares each 20cm X 20cm.
The squares will be sent to Africa where prisoners will spend their time knitting the squares together into quilts, which will then be distributed to orphanages and other areas. All donations are made through children’s charity KasCare.
Buninyong’s Phyllis Eason said she was happy to help the worthwhile cause.
“I knit everywhere I go whether I’m watching tv or I’m out somewhere,” she said. Fellow knitter Carla Berlyn said it was great to convert time spent in the doctor’s waiting room into something that helps others.
