The carport and garage of a Richards Street unit went up in flames about 12.50am yesterday after a series of loud bangs.
A man was spotted fleeing the scene on foot and witnesses later told police they heard a car speed off, although it was not sighted.
Fire crews were called to the blaze and prevented it from spreading to the house and other nearby buildings.
About $10,000 damage was caused to the carport.
Arson chemists investigated the scene yesterday, where a burnt-out tennis ball was found.
The owner of the property was home at the time but was not injured.
Neighbours yesterday said they were awoken by loud bangs.
“It was bloody loud, they were almighty bangs,” said one neighbour.
Another said loud noises were common in the area, but nowhere near as loud as the ones yesterday.
“All the dogs in the neighbourhood were going off,” the neighbour said.
Any witnesses or anybody with information is asked to call Ballarat Criminal Investigation Unit on 5336 6080 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
