Make plans for the worst over the holiday season: City of Ballarat

HOMEOWNERS and visitors to Ballarat should prepare emergency plans and resources for the summer holiday season, local authorities say.

The City of Ballarat last week encouraged all residents to create an emergency plan and communicate it with all family members and visitors during possible extreme weather events including bushfires.

The plans should include how to keep in touch during an emergency, a meeting place in case people are separated, an out-of-town contact person and arrangements for pets needing access to food and water.

Homeowners should be prepared by keeping important documents and possessions in safe places, with up-to-date insurance policies and access to electricity, gas and water cut-off points.

“During the summer holidays, Ballarat welcomes many visitors and it’s important to make sure that everyone in your house knows what to do in the event of an emergency,” a City of Ballarat spokesperson said.

“Take a few minutes to discuss emergency situations and your planned responses – it’s a discussion that could save your life.”

Residents are encouraged to make a record of important phone numbers, including local police, State Emergency Service and electricity and water providers.

In any life threatening situation, call 000 for for police, fire and ambulance.
