Marcia King’s exhibition Anything Can Happen If You Let It at the Red Brick Gallery opened on Friday with art lovers waiting on the doorstep to join the experiment of buying King’s artworks before they are created.
Each of the works will be created before the show closes with a gala event on January 12.
“I am humbled and a little baffled that people would be willing to buy blank pieces of paper when there is no guarantee what image will be drawn on that paper,” King said.
“I could draw a stick figure if I wanted, that’s the gamble they have been willing to take.”
Other pieces sold before the show include $220 commissions for King to draw from photographs provided by the patron.
“We opened the doors at 10am for people to come and buy a blank piece of paper and by 10.03 we had not only sold the original five gamble pieces but then extended it to eight because we felt bad saying ‘no’.”
In place of an opening event, the exhibition will be celebrated with an official closing launch on January 12 from 3-5pm, with one artwork given away to a lucky attendee.
The exhibition coincides with King’s departure from the Red Brick Gallery team.
