With resolutions planned and good spirits overflowing all around town, party-goers flocked to CBD nightspots, house parties and the shores of Lake Wendouree to ring in the new year.

As the clock ticked towards midnight, Ballarat had something for everyone.

Families gathered at Lake Wendouree for picnics and barbecues in the mild conditions before sunset with the Goossens family from Smythes Creek joining more than a dozen groups.

Competition was tough for space on the adventure playground and the swing set, as families gathered at the outdoor eating areas and public barbecues.

Sharing a meal of fish and chips, Mick and Ali Goossens along with Brody, 9, and Ashleigh, 10, said they were pleased to be starting 2013 fit and well.

“We decided to come down here to celebrate tonight and save on the cooking by picking up some fish and chips... it is great to be here as a family to share such a nice night.” Mr Goossens said.

Small sets of fireworks were set off near Lydiard Street at about 9.30pm, with the bells of the Ballarat Town Hall greeting party-goers heading to the George Hotel, the Regent Cinema and newly opened Jacksons and Co.

Inside the George’s Round the World Party, Irish-born beauties Jenny Flynn and Dee Moore said they were preparing for a night to remember.

“At home we don’t usually go out this early for New Years Eve but it looks like it will be a good celebration for the start of the year,” Ms Flynn said.

Crowds at Bluestone nightclub’s Masquerade party got bigger later in the evening.

With warm weather expected, even a few sore heads won’t stop New Years celebrations continuing in Ballarat today.
