Crowd enjoys first session of Ballarat's Summer Sundays

CROWDS from all over the city flocked to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens at the weekend for the first Summer Sundays session of the year.

Despite the hot weather, the event attracted close to 1500 people from Ballarat and district eager to enjoy some unique performances and indulge in some delicious food.

City of Ballarat Portfolio Councillor for Destination and Economy Amy Johnson said the number of people at the event was more than three times the number that attended last year’s first Summer Sundays concert.

“The biggest crowd last year was just under 1200 so it’s particularly pleasing that we’ve seen such a large increase for the first concert,” Cr Johnson said.

“I think this time of year everyone is on holidays and a lot of people come to Ballarat to visit family and friends so it’s a really great event to go to because it’s chilled-out and offers a nice opportunity to connect with others.”

Melbourne-based duo Lily and King kick-started Sunday’s show with its quirky acoustic junkyard tunes.

The eclectic pair impressed the audience with a lively performance which featured an array of instruments and some good old-fashioned foot stomping.

Local act Bobby Ballinger  Swingin’ Safari was next to the stage performing some of the greatest jazz and swing tunes from the 1930s and 1940s.

“It’s a free public event which caters for everyone and it seems that there is such a wide cross-section of the community attending,” Cr Johnson said.

The next Summer Sundays will be held this weekend featuring local musician Mark with the Sea and blues/roots outfit Zydeco Jump.
