BASSIE Steenhuis had a career-first training double at Shepparton harness races last Tuesday.
Tallulah Bay ($1.20 favourite) spearheaded the night for the Glen Park hobby trainer with victory in a heat of The Lombo for two-year-old fillies, 1690m.
Art Wizard ($2 favourite) completed the double in a C0 pace, 1690m, to bring up his third career win.
Each was driven by Gavin Lang.
Unbeaten in two starts after scoring on debut at Kilmore, Tallulah Bay is by Metropolitan and leased from Darren and Anne Jacobson at Rosehill Farm at Clarke’s Hill – not far from the Steenhuis stable.
She is the first winner out of NZ-bred mare Bye The Deep South (7 wins).
Tallulah Bay was secured by the Steenhuis family after being unwanted in the sale ring.
He said the filly had been picked out by 14-year-old son Zach, who was a part-owner.
“He (Zach) does all the work with her,” said Steenhuis senior, who has been training about 10 years.
The $25,000 Lombo final is at Shepparton next Saturday night.
